Background of the study
This research explores the impact of regional language policies on the standardization of the Tiv language in Benue, a state known for its diverse linguistic landscape. Regional policies have been crafted to address the unique needs of indigenous languages, aiming to ensure that languages such as Tiv receive the necessary support for formal education and cultural preservation (Nwankwo, 2023). The study examines the evolution of Tiv language policies, emphasizing their role in unifying dialectal variations and enhancing linguistic coherence. Statement of the problem
Regional language policies aimed at standardizing the Tiv language in Benue have encountered significant implementation challenges. Despite the introduction of uniform orthographic guidelines and curriculum reforms, discrepancies persist in classroom practices and learning outcomes (Nwankwo, 2023). Educators face difficulties in adapting to standardized materials, and local dialectal variations further complicate the process of achieving linguistic uniformity. Moreover, inadequate teacher training and limited resource allocation exacerbate the problem, undermining efforts to create a cohesive standard for the Tiv language (Ibrahim, 2024). This study addresses these challenges by critically evaluating the impact of current regional policies and identifying gaps between policy design and educational practice.
